About Fudan University
Founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School and later rechristened as Fudan University in 1917, this prestigious institution stands as the first higher education establishment independently founded by the Chinese. Fudan's rich history further expanded with the merger of Shanghai Medical University, originally the Fourth National Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927, in the year 2000. Today, Fudan University is a multidisciplinary hub, encompassing 11 diverse fields of study including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. In a testament to its academic excellence, it was selected in 2017 for the "double first-class" initiative, leading to the development of 27 "double first-class" disciplines and cementing its status as a globally recognized comprehensive research university in China.
Fudan's expansive structure includes 35 directly affiliated departments and 18 affiliated hospitals, four of which are under construction, reflecting its commitment to healthcare and medical education. The university offers a rich tapestry of academic programs: 79 undergraduate programs, 37 first-level doctoral degree programs, 43 first-level master's degree programs (inclusive of those integrated with doctoral degrees), alongside 4 standalone doctoral degree programs, 32 master's degree programs, and a significant network of 35 post-doctoral research centers. The university's diverse student body encompasses approximately 13,991 undergraduate and junior college students and 22,232 graduate students from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and around the world, including 2,946 international students. The esteemed faculty of 3,139 members includes 51 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 distinguished professor in liberal arts, 13 senior professors in liberal arts fields, 118 National Outstanding Young Scholars Science Fund awardees, and 301 members of various national Important Young Talents Programs.
Fudan's global standing is reflected in its QS World University Ranking at 40th globally and 3rd among Chinese universities. Nineteen of its disciplines rank within the world's top 1% in ESI, with areas like chemistry, materials science, clinical medicine, pharmacology, and toxicology enjoying a significant global presence. The university boasts 29 subjects in the world's top 100 according to QS World Subject Rankings, placing it third in China. It also has four subjects in the top 50 globally in U.S. News World Subject Rankings and one in The Times Higher Education World Subject Rankings. In the national first-level discipline evaluation, five disciplines were rated A+, with over 60% achieving Class A status. Fourteen disciplines have been selected by Shanghai for peak discipline construction.
Fudan University's research capabilities are showcased by its 5 state key laboratories, 1 State Mathematics Center, 2 National Clinical Medical Research Centers, 1 National Manufacturing Innovation Center, multiple engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, numerous key laboratories of the Ministry of Education and the Commission of Health, along with 15 Shanghai key laboratories and 11 Shanghai Engineering Research Centers. Its 10 key research bases in humanities and social sciences, including the China Research Institute and the Institute of Marxism, underline its commitment to scholarly exploration. As a high-end think tank construction pilot unit and the secretariat for the "Chinese University Think Tank Forum," Fudan is at the forefront of intellectual discourse in China.
Fudan University's international reach extends through cooperation agreements with over 270 universities and institutions in more than 40 countries and regions.
