Research Institute of Intelligent Complex Systems of Fudan University was officially established in June 2018. It is a second-level on-campus scientific research institution that leverages the strengths of Fudan University's five disciplines: social sciences, arts, science, medicine and engineering. With the support of Fudan University's tradition of cross-integration research and development, the institute focuses on multi-dimensional intelligent complex systems integrating the new generation of intelligent computing, cyberspace and physical environment. Its primary focus lies in developing novel algorithms for seamless integration between efficient virtual computing spaces and physical environments while enabling independent dynamic evolution. The institute provides core algorithms and technical support to facilitate integration, intelligent adaptation, and expansion across various types of intelligent complex systems.
Currently, the institute has 2 selected candidates from the National Important Talent Program, 3 selected candidates from the National Young Talent Program, 5 selected candidates from the Shanghai Important Talent Program, 1 Oriental scholar and a cohort of interdisciplinary young researchers and engineering and technical personnel. The institute has undertaken numerous national key research and development projects, key projects of the Natural Science Foundation Committee, key major projects of social development/Basic theory/high-tech of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, major special projects at the municipal level in Shanghai, as well as medical insurance budget modeling projects in Shanghai and other regions.
On September 14th, 2023, the Ministry of Education officially approved doctoral degree authorization for Complex Systems Science and Engineering as a first-level discipline. Research Institute of Intelligent Complex Systems of Fudan University (Department code: 089) is responsible for the establishment and implementation of this degree program. The major code for Complex Systems Science and Engineering is 079901, with three specific enrollment directions: 01 Complex systems theory (including applied mathematics), 02 complex systems modeling and regulation (including biomedical engineering) and 03 complex systems science and engineering.
Main objectives of the research institute:
I. Place equal emphasis on foundational knowledge and practical application, combining intelligence with industrialization, integrating the needs of civil and national defense sectors. Conduct research on common problems related to intelligent complex systems, and explore efficient and scientific modeling theories, methods and tools for intelligent complex systems.
II. Develop intelligent modeling methods and prototype sets of models, software, and verification environments that are relevant to various complex systems in fields such as national economy, people's livelihoods, and national security. Strive to enhance the modernization of governance systems and capabilities by ultimately achieving a multi-dimensional digital twin.
III. Establish a comprehensive interdisciplinary system for personnel training, scientific research, and innovation in disciplines including systems science, next-generation artificial intelligence (AI), public administration and emergency management.
