On October 18, 2022, a landmark event took place at Fudan University – the expert demonstration conference for the establishment of a first-level degree authorization in Complex Systems Science and Engineering. This significant initiative, under the cross-category classification, was co-organized by the Graduate School and the Development Planning Office of Fudan University.

The conference, led by Academician Guo Lei, was conducted both virtually and in person. Distinguished participants included Academicians Jiang Song, Li Jun, Ma LAN, Tang Chao, and several esteemed professors and researchers from various disciplines. The conference was attended by key university personnel, including Academician Ma Yugang, various Vice Presidents, Directors, and Professors from respective research institutes and departments. Their collective participation underscored the interdisciplinary nature of the proposed program.


Following the conference, the Academic Degree Assessment Committee of Fudan University in its 111th Cross-division meeting and subsequent plenary session, held on October 23 and October 31, 2022, respectively, voted in favor of establishing the Complex Systems Science and Engineering program.


This pioneering program at Fudan University, involving collaboration across various research institutes, represents a significant stride in interdisciplinary education. It aims to foster innovation at the intersection of system science and complexity research, aligning with national and regional innovation needs.
